Alvin “Al” Showers III, an award-winning journalist and long-time broadcast news contributor, died Saturday, February 21, 2026, in Mobile, Alabama, following a heroic battle with cancer.
A veteran broadcaster most recently with WEAR-TV in Pensacola, Florida, Al’s career was defined by profound integrity and a deep care for the community he served. His roles as a photojournalist and news writer were executed with a passion that resonated on and off the screen. Colleagues from his tenure at WEAR and earlier at WLOX-TV remember a journalist of the highest caliber.

“Al Showers was a real news man; they just don’t make them like Al anymore,” reflected a former coworker. “He truly cared about his reporting and his behind-the-scenes work in the field. We knew when we stood alongside Al as he covered a story, it was going to be right, and it was going to matter.”
Carrying on a family legacy in journalism, Al was the nephew of the late, revered broadcaster Mel Showers of WKRG. Al built his own distinguished path, known for heartfelt reporting.
