DOTHAN, Ala — A late-night walk along a busy highway turned fatal early Saturday morning, claiming the life of a Hartford man.
The victim has been identified by Geneva County Coroner Donny Adkinson as 52-year-old Richard Williams Jr. The tragic incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on East Highway 52 in Hartford. Authorities reported that Williams Jr. was hit while walking along the roadway and was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a heartbreaking detail, Coroner Adkinson noted that just prior to the crash, a 911 call was placed to report a man walking in the road. The response to the scene was extensive, involving the Hartford Police Department, Geneva County Sheriff’s Office, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), Hartford Fire and Rescue, and the Geneva County Coroner’s Office.
The investigation into the exact circumstances of the crash is being led by ALEA. Officials have not released further details regarding the vehicle involved or any potential charges. The sudden loss has cast a pall over the community as authorities work to piece together the events that led to the tragedy on the darkened highway.
